Meet Dr. Evan Chwa, Northbrook Orthodontist
Dr. Evan Chwa is an orthodontist at Janzen & Chwa Orthodontics in Northbrook, Illinois. Dr. Evan Chwa earned his Doctor of Dental Medicine at the University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry and completed his Specialty Certificate in Orthodontics and Master of Science in Oral Sciences there. He is a published co-author on clear aligner research and practices alongside his father, Dr. Kyint Chwa.
Most orthodontists decide on the specialty in dental school. Dr. Evan Chwa decided in high school, because he was already in the building. He grew up in Morton Grove before the family moved north, attended Glenbrook North High School, and spent a good part of those years helping out at his father’s practice. Watching patients arrive self-conscious and leave otherwise made an impression that stuck.

The anthropology minor was not a detour. Dr. Evan Chwa’s undergraduate work led directly into research on dental wear and tooth structure, and it left him with a habit of looking at teeth as part of a whole system rather than as objects to be lined up.

The second paper is worth a sentence of explanation, because its subject is the least glamorous and most useful part of aligner treatment: what to do when a case stops tracking to plan. Every aligner patient’s teeth follow a predicted path, and sometimes they do not. Knowing how to diagnose that early and correct course is the difference between a supervised case and a set of trays in the post. It is a research interest that shows up directly in how clear aligner treatment is monitored here.
Approach to Patient Care
Dr. Evan Chwa describes orthodontics as a mix of science and craft, and treats it that way. The planning is evidence-based and precise. The execution is hands-on work on the most visible feature a person has, which is a reason to take the aesthetic side seriously rather than dismiss it.
In practice that means explaining the reasoning, showing patients the digital simulation of where treatment is heading, and being straight about what a given approach can and cannot achieve. He treats teens, adults and younger children, with braces and with aligners.
A Local Practice, Genuinely
Dr. Evan Chwa grew up in this area and went to school here. Glenbrook North is the practice’s own village high school, and a good number of our teenage patients now walk its halls. Growing up in Morton Grove and finishing school in Northbrook means the school calendars, the sports seasons and the geography of the north suburbs are not something he had to learn from a map.
Outside the Office
Away from the practice, Dr. Evan Chwa travels internationally, goes to concerts, plays video games, and spends time with his fiancée, Yeemon.
