Orthodontic Retainers to Prevent Teeth Shifting
Finishing orthodontic treatment is a huge accomplishment, but maintaining your smile takes ongoing care. We create personalized retainer plans to ensure your results last for years, not just months. Proper wear and care of your retainers is the single most important step in preserving your investment.
Why Retainers Are Important After Braces or Clear Aligners
After braces or aligners are removed, your teeth aren’t fully “locked” in place. The bone and soft tissues around your teeth need time to adapt to their new positions. Without a retainer, teeth can gradually shift back, undoing the progress you’ve achieved. Even once your smile is stable, natural forces from chewing and muscle movement can cause teeth to move, which is why lifelong retainer wear is often recommended.
Types of Retainers We Offer
Removable Retainers
Worn full-time for the first year, except while eating or brushing
After one year: typically worn nightly as wisdom teeth develop
Once wisdom teeth are addressed: worn at least one night per week to prevent natural shifting
Routine check-ups every 6–9 months, with X-rays every 18 months to monitor stability
Fixed (Bonded) Retainers
A thin wire discreetly bonded behind your teeth to hold them in place permanently
Ideal for patients prone to shifting or with complex bite corrections
Must be monitored during regular dental cleanings to ensure it remains intact and clean
If removed, a removable retainer will replace it
We also offer Hawley retainers and clear retainers, depending on your treatment needs and lifestyle preferences.
How to Care for Your Retainer
Avoid heat: Keep away from dishwashers, hot cars, or anything above 115°F
Store properly: Always use your protective case when not wearing it
Keep away from pets: Dogs especially love chewing on retainers
Clean daily: Use mild soap and a soft toothbrush before and after wearing
Deep clean periodically: Use products like Efferdent to remove tartar buildup
Replace when necessary: Lost or damaged retainers may require a replacement fee
Report issues immediately: If your retainer feels loose, breaks, or doesn’t fit, contact us right away
When Extra Retention May Be Needed
Some patients benefit from more diligent retainer wear, including those with:
Mouth breathing habits
Teeth clenching or grinding
Tongue thrusting or abnormal tongue posture
Playing reed instruments
Lip sucking or chewing on objects
Large gaps or rotated teeth before treatment
