Orthodontist Emergency Care
Orthodontic treatment is designed to be safe and comfortable, but sometimes an issue may come up during care. Dental emergencies while wearing braces or other appliances usually fall into two main categories: appliance-related problems and direct injuries to the mouth or teeth.
Being prepared and knowing what to do can help keep your treatment on track and protect your smile.
Emergencies Related to Orthodontic Appliances
Braces and orthodontic appliances are strong, but accidents can happen. If you experience a broken bracket, loose wire, or other appliance problem that causes pain, please call our office at (847)-272-0600 during patient hours so we can schedule a repair. Some walk-in visits aren’t possible because we want to give each patient the time and attention they deserve.
If it is after hours, please call us at (847)-272-0600 and follow the voice mail instructions to contact our emergency phone number.
Here are some quick fixes you can try at home until you can see us:
Irritating or poking wire – Cover the area with orthodontic wax. You can also gently push the wire down with a pencil eraser or cotton swab.
Loose bracket or band – If it’s still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover with wax. If it can be removed, save it in an envelope for your next appointment.
Loose wire – Try gently repositioning it with tweezers or needle-nosed pliers. If needed, tie it with floss or cover sharp ends with wax.
Direct Injuries to the Mouth and Teeth
If you have a direct injury—like a fall, sports accident, or other trauma—apply ice to reduce swelling, then contact your general dentist. X-rays are often needed to check for damage. If a tooth is chipped, displaced, or knocked out, your dentist should be your first call. After treatment, we can adjust or replace any disturbed orthodontic appliances.
Headgear Concerns
Discomfort from headgear is often caused by not wearing it as prescribed. Follow your orthodontist’s instructions carefully. If the metal facebow is bent or painful, call our office for help. The more you wear it as directed, the more comfortable it will become.
After-Hours Emergency Care
If an emergency happens outside office hours and the patient is in pain, please call our office. Our voicemail will provide instructions on who to contact to get care quickly.
